Born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, January 26, 1910, Reg Beazley was an all-round athlete who refused to part with the sports he loved when his playing days ended.
The Dartmouth native, an outstanding athlete in baseball, hockey, and track and field, became one of the most active sport officials in the province, refereeing hockey and baseball at the highest possible provincial levels.
He refereed in the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey during the Second World War when the calibre of play was nearly equal to the National Hockey League. He umpired in the Halifax and District Baseball League when that circuit was sending players by the score to the major and high minor leagues of professional baseball.
As an umpire, he liked to patrol the infield where his speed and agility kept him on top of the play. As a hockey official, he had no trouble keeping up with the fastest playmakers the Nova Scotia League could provide.
He refereed in the Big Four and Six Hockey Leagues, which were similar in calibre to the American Hockey League, but he refused a promotion to pro hockey because he preferred to stay at home where he could handle both baseball and hockey games.
He was named Dartmouth’s Citizen of the Year in 1981 and his induction to the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame was held in 1990.
