Eligibility for Nomination:
The Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame accepts nominations from the public for the categories of Athlete, Builder and Team. The Hall of Fame encourages the public to submit nominations for review. The following are points to consider when submitting your nomination.
1. "What has this person/team contributed to sport in Nova Scotia and at what level?" The Selection Committee looks at different levels when comparing and reviewing.
Local/community level
Provincial level
Maritime level
National level
International level
2. When reviewed the Committee takes into account the era in which the individual or team competed. The opportunities for participation in events on the national and international scene were not as available to people in the past. (ex.) A hockey player who plays for the New York Rangers farm system in the 20's and 30's, when there were only 6 teams in the NHL, is different than playing minor league hockey today when there are 30 NHL teams. Each regional committee has members, which can relate to the eras which younger members cannot relate to first hand. (ex. Halifax & District League, Cape Breton Colliery League, Big Four Hockey League)
3. Residence requirements : Athlete -
Must be born in Nova Scotia, spent the majority of their life as a Nova Scotian or their competitive career took place while representing Nova Scotia.(paddlers/hockey players/baseball players/etc) Builders - do not have to be born in N.S. but the focus of their activities must advance the sport in which they are involved throughout this province.
Athletes must be retired from their active sport for three years.(There are exceptions such as golfers/curlers who can compete in senior and master levels up to an elderly age.) The benchmark here is three years after their last major accomplishment. The three year wait after the last major accomplishmen also applies for team nominations. Builders may be nominated while still active.
4. Personal character beyond the sport is a factor when selection committee reviews nominations. They must be a good role model. The individual may have had an exemplary sport career but they may also have had personal problems away form the sport. This is taken into account.
5. Documentation: All nominations need corroborating support to verify the claims made in the nomination submission. Supporting material such as dated clippings, articles, letters of achievement, photographs, certificates, etc need to accompany the nomination form. The documentation does not need to be originals, they can be photocopies. Filling out the form is not enough. Please ensure information is typed and chronological.
6. Each year the Selection Committee reviews on average between 75-100 nominations. Only eight at the most are selected for each induction year, five inductees being the maximum for athletes and three the maximum for builders. Staff at the Hall of Fame are available throughout the year to answer any questions regarding nominations and to assist in putting the nomination together.
